HWS Leadership Courses

Throughout this program I have taken three leadership classes and have participated in 45 hours of fieldwork.

What did these courses/fieldwork experience do for me?

  • Taught me strategies for creating change

  • Allowed me to explore many sides of leadership

  • Meet and connected with peers

  • Gained a variety of valuable and transferable skills

  • Engaged in meaningful discussion about critical issues

Leadership Theory 1

My Freshmen spring, I was admitted into the HWS Lead's Leadership Theory 1 course. Here, I had the chance to learn from a variety of leadership theories. One of the most important theories I learned was that leadership is comprised of leaders, followers, and context.

What is the difference between a leader and a manager?

In this course I learned that leaders are concerned with doing the right thing and managers are concerned with doing things right.

Effective Leadership

  • Working together and motivating others towards a common goal / purpose.

  • Working together with followers

Effective Followers:

  • Necessary for a leader to lead

  • Actively participate and provide feedback

  • Needed for an organization to be successful

  • Contribute to the goals of the organization

Leadership in Context:

  • Leaders should have different behaviors based on context /  situations

This course taught me that leaders are equally important to followers. I have learned the importance of being an effective follower and believe that I have the qualities of both a leader and effective follower.

My Follower qualities include:

  • Judgement

  • Work ethic

  • Loyalty

  • Courage

My Leadership qualities include:

  • Confidence

  • Empathy

  • Resilience

  • Goal orientated

  • Problem Solving

  • Accountability

Leadership Theory 2

Sophomore year I was a part of the Leadership Theory 2 course. Here, I had the chance to learn different models of implementing leadership strategies, goal setting, 100-day plans, and the importance of being a global citizen.

After learning about the Kotter Model I had the chance to come up with my own change leadership 'First 100 Days Research Brief' This process taught me that in any position, what you bring to the table for the first 100 days will determine your position. If you want to make a change and be an effective leader, write a 100-day Action Plan.

Also part of Leadership Theory 2 course we watched a variety of Ted talks about leadership. One that particularly stood out to me was the TED Talk by Hugh Evans, founder of 'Global Citizens'. Throughout this video I considered the question: What is a global citizen?

Evans defines a Global citizen as someone who "self identifies first and foremost not as a member of a state, a tribe or a nation but as a member of the human race" and "someone who is prepare to act on that belief to tackle our world's greatest challenges.

To be a global citizen means you have to act.

This particular Ted Talk taught me that to make a difference locally, nationally, and internationally, the least I can do is to do something positive everyday.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking  was one of my favorite courses as it taught me strategies and useful techniques to present to groups of all different sizes. Before, I had always been afraid to get up in front of groups to present, even if it was a small number of people. My hands would shake the paper, I would look directly at the slides on the board, my face flushed and my mouth dry. This class improved my communication skills both inside and outside of the classroom.

Different methods included:

  • The use of bullet points on note cards,

  • Outlines

  • Pecha Kuchas

  • Story telling

  • Persuasive speeches

I received constructive feedback on my style and mannerisms from my professors and peers which allowed for continuous improvement. After taking this class I have learned effective ways to write and deliver a speech of my own.

Fieldwork

In Spring 2020, I had the opportunity to intern at 29 Design Studio in downtown Geneva. 29 Design Studio is a small boutique branding and marketing agency that specializes in strategy, marketing and design to help businesses achieve next-level growth. Here, I had exposure to a professional work environment where I learned the ins and outs of marketing and marketing strategies.

What did I do/learn:

  • I created social content to be distributed through social media platforms such as: Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

  • I learned how to read 29 Design Studio’s analytics. Through this I was able to understand how many likes and impressions I would receive on each of my social media posts. I had the opportunity to build from this as some posts would get a small amount of likes and views and others would be very popular.

  • Creation of Marketing Campaigns

  • S.W.O.T. Analysis of industries
