William Smith Club Lacrosse

Updated: May 1, 2020

Sophomore year my roommate, Clare, and I decided to join the William Smith Club Lacrosse team which was lead by 2 William Smith Juniors. Every Tuesday and Thursday we were committed to practices where we would refresh our stick skills and scrimmage. At the end of our Sophomore year, we were asked if we would like to become co-captains. We were ecstatic.

That following fall of 2018, Clare and I held an interest meeting targeting incoming Freshmen but open to each grade. We were pleased with the number of William Smith players who were interested, 50 people to be exact showed up to our interest meeting.

Clare and I were determined to get everything going as soon as possible so we could all get out on the field.

First, we created a Facebook page and added the list of 50 girls who attended the interest meeting. Next, we met with the Athletic Director to allow us field time. One week later we held our first practice on the Boswell field.

Each week Clare and I would sit down to plan our practices and write up a Facebook post to remind players of practice times each Monday and Wednesday.

Each practice, about 20-25 William Smith players would show up, some without a stick but just hoping to exercise and meet new people.

Practices consisted of: Stretches, Drills, Team building, Scrimmages, Games, Ball control, Passing and Shooting etc.

This role has taught me how to work with people at different levels and skills sets. Some of the girls who joined the team just wanted to be a part of something or learn the game of lacrosse. I enjoyed seeing friendships formed on the field and being a part of a team again.
